The evaluation process is very important, and we utilize effective testing techniques and methodologies is to ensure accuracy of the precious metals content and thus we are able to give you the highest, most accurate compensation to you.
We begin the evaluation process by sorting items that are clearly not gold or silver. To do this we use a strong rare earth magnet made from rare earth elements such as neodymium. The reason we use this is because gold and silver are not magnetic whereas other metals such as copper and nickel are magnetic. This helps us quickly sort the items.
Sorting involves checking for stamps, jewelers marks or hallmarks on the item. This can be helpful in providing us with some clues on the item such as the maker, when it was made, the provenance, and importantly how much gold or precious metal is contained in the item. We use a jewelers magnifying equipment here which helps us analyze the items carefully.
There are several steps and processes to determine the value of gold and the purity. We use industry standard as well as modern state of the art testing technology during the testing process. Having the ability to test the purity is crucial for anyone involved in buying or selling gold or precious metals. Occasionally a lower quality of gold may be stamped with a higher grade marking, or other times it may not be gold at all, but rather “plated” with gold or silver over top of a base metal such as copper in such a way that it is not immediately apparent that it is plated. We do all of our testing right in front of you and we explain every step of the testing to you during our meeting.
The importance of using effective testing techniques and methodologies is to ensure accuracy of the precious metals content and thus we are able to give you the highest, most accurate compensation to you. As mentioned, we will explain every step of the process to you while we are doing it and give you our insights so that the entire process is transparent and comfortable to you so that you will be reassured that you are dealing with professionals.
If you have any questions about testing before you send in your items or stopping by one of our locations, please feel free to contact us anytime.
Once all the items have been sorted and examined, we begin weighing the items on a scale. The scale is calibrated each time it is used to ensure accuracy. Our scale will show you the true weight of your items in grams or ounces when dealing with larger quantities. Typically we weigh all items identified at a particular karat together but can also weigh individual items for you.
If your items contain diamonds or gemstones that are large enough to have significant resale value (typically diamonds larger than 0.25 carats), we will pay you for these as well! We have been trained by G.I.A., an internationally respected diamond and gemstone education and grading company, and are qualified to assess and value your diamonds and gemstones.
